Wellfleet
Wellfleet has great National Seashore beaches, an old-fashioned
drive-in theater, and is famous for its art and craft galleries.
The Wellfleet Bay Wildlife Sanctuary features ponds, tidal
creeks, a salt marsh and a beach along with 5 miles of walking
trails. Great beaches include Marconi Beach and White Crest
Beach. Very few people live here year round; in the summertime,
visitors flock to the rental houses on the cliffs overlooking
the beaches bordering the Atlantic Ocean. For those interested
in a picturesque walk, the Great Island Trail (once an island,
but now a peninsula) has great scenery along its 8-miles of
trails, offering forest, beach, and marsh paths.
An
excellent choice for entertainment is the Wellfleet Drive-in,
located directly behind the Wellfleet Cinemas. The drive-in is
the only on the Cape and one of the last in New England, and as
such it draws a great deal of both local and tourist attention.
From late April through September the drive-in shows two feature
movies starting at dusk. Another attraction is Wellfleet’s
downtown center, comprised of Main Street and Commercial Street.
Here you will find many art galleries, a few restaurants, and
the Town Pier, a bustling site of blue-collar fishermen and
scallopers. On the other shore, the Beachcomber restaurant, the
only Cape restaurant located right on the Atlantic shore, is
famous for its raw bar and entertainment, in addition to its
location atop the cliffs at Cahoon Hollow Beach. |
