Sandwich Glass Museum

Located near the First Church of Christ and
Shawme Pond, the recently renovated and improved
Sandwich Glass Museum contains a collection of
glass items, including both blown and pressed
glass. The museum, which is operated by the
Sandwich Historical Society, also has other
exhibits relating to the history of the town.
Glass blowing demonstrations are given during
the summer, and there is also a gift shop that
sells both historic glass products as well as
contemporary pieces from local artisans.

Thornton W. Burgess Museum

Thornton W. Burgess, who lived from 1874-1965,
authored hundreds of children’s books and
stories. His stories featured animals as
characters, and Burgess was also an advocate of
conservation. In the summer months, bring the
kids for storytelling gatherings. There is a
gift shop that sells his books and various
Burgess and animal-themed trinkets. The museum
is located on Shawne Pond, and is in walking
distance of other museums and attractions in
Sandwich Center.

Dexter Grist Mill

Dexter Grist Mill, built on Shawme Pond in the
center of historic Sandwich Village, was
constructed in 1637. The Mill still operates in
the summer, and you can buy fresh corn meal.

Shawme Pond
Located near the town hall and home to Dexter
Grist Mill, Shawme Pond is a beautiful
centerpiece to Sandwich Village. You can fish,
watch ducks and swans, and walk around the pond.

Hoxie House

Constructed in the late 1600’s, the Hoxie House
is regarded as the oldest house on Cape Cod. The
former home of Reverend John Smith and his
family, the house is now a museum, complete with
antique furnishings and no plumbing or
electricity.

Heritage Museums and Gardens

Paths weave through beautiful acres upon acres
of gardens, leading to the many museums at
Heritage. The Antique Automobile Museum, in a
Shaker Barn, hosts over thirty antique cars in
immaculate condition. In the American History
Museum, you will find antique firearms,
miniature soldiers, army memorabilia, and even
Native American artifacts. Also, there is an
exhibit that pays tribute to the Cape Cod
Baseball League. The Art Museum at Heritage has
an Americana collection, antique toys, a Currier
and Ives Collection, and folk-art. Heritage also
has concerts in the summer, which are usually
held on Wednesday and Saturday nights and Sunday
afternoons. There is also a working Carousel, a
favorite among the children, and a café that
offers snacks and lighter fare. Heritage Museums
and Gardens has something for all ages and
interests.

Sandwich Boardwalk
Town Neck Beach
When the old Sandwich Boardwalk was destroyed
due to harsh weather in 1991, the community
rallied together to build a new one. Their
creation, the new Boardwalk, is built a marsh
and creek—and is a great walk to Town Neck
Beach.

Sandwich Fish Hatchery

The Sandwich Fish Hatchery raises fish which
stock ponds in Sandwich. For a quarter, you can
buy food for the fish and watch them compete for
a meal.

Operated by the Thornton Burgess Society, the
Green Briar Nature Center has a wildflower
garden, a Conservation Area with walking trails,
and a jam kitchen where you can see jam made in
front of you. Nature classes and walks are held
here in addition to jam-making classes.
